Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher regarded as one of the founders of Western philosophy. He is best known for the Socratic method, a form of questioning designed to encourage critical thinking and uncover deeper truths. Unlike many philosophers, Socrates wrote nothing himself; his ideas were preserved through the works of his students, especially Plato. He focused on ethics, virtue, and the pursuit of knowledge, believing that wisdom begins with recognizing one’s own ignorance. His teachings continue to influence philosophy, education, and logical reasoning today.
